    Preparing for Regionals 2009

    Hey Guys,

Its regionals time again and some of you might be sitting at home thinking "I dunno if I'm gonna play" and "if I do which deck". Well I figured I would draw on the wealth of information I have available to me (the internet) and share a few deck types and lists.

When choosing a deck you really want to go with something that suits your play style. If you are used to a hard and fast aggressive strategy you might find it hard to play a deck packed with counterspells and defensive cards. Whatever your play style is, there is a deck in this article for you.

Here's a few things I've seen and played with over the last few weeks:

    BW Tokens

    4 Arcane Sanctum
    4 Caves of Koilos
    4 Fetid Heath
    2 Mutavault
    2 Plains
    4 Reflecting Pool
    1 Swamp
    4 Windbrisk Heights

    4 Cloudgoat Ranger
    4 Kitchen Finks
    4 Knight of Meadowgrain
    4 Tidehollow Sculler

    3 Ajani Goldmane
    4 Bitterblossom
    3 Glorious Anthem
    4 Spectral Procession
    2 Terror
    3 Zealous Persecution

    sb
    1 Ajani Goldmane
    3 Burrenton Forge-Tender
    1 Celestial Purge
    2 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
    2 Head Games
    3 Path to Exile
    1 Wispmare
    2 Wrath of God

    RW Boat Brew

    3 Mountain
    4 Plains
    4 Battlefield Forge
    4 Reflecting Pool
    4 Rugged Prairie
    4 Windbrisk Heights

    4 Figure Of Destiny
    1 Flamekin Harbinger
    4 Fulminator Mage
    2 Mogg Fanatic
    3 Ranger Of Eos
    3 Reveillark
    4 Siege-gang Commander

    3 Ajani Vengeant

    3 Path To Exile

    4 Spectral Procession
    2 Wrath Of God

    sb
    2 Burrenton Forge-tender

    1 Path To Exile
    3 Volcanic Fallout
    1 Ajani Vengeant
    3 Elspeth, Knight-errant
    1 Austere Command
    2 Wrath Of God

The token decks are a good way of pushing through the wall of control that is ever present at magic tournaments. More creatures than they can terror and free spells off windbrisk heights makes these decks a powerful force!

Cruel control (5C and Grixis Control)

    sb
    4 Scepter Of Fugue
    3 Flashfreeze
    3 Deathmark
    2 Pyroclasm
    3 Thoughtseize

The Cruel control decks are the most fun to play as you get to slow your opponents rush to a crawl then play 7 cost sorceries that do more than a single magic card should do even for a 7 drop!

    Esper Lark

Reveillark ever the power house in block and standard for the last year, this new breed of lark finds an interesting spot in the meta with the hand disruption of the Sculler and the creature disruption of Sower and friends. You'll love bringing them back again and again all day long

Green White agro hasn't been the strongest over the years but this is starting to change. As many top slots have been taken up by the new green white Overrun deck and the solid Rafiq style Bant

    Jund Ramp

    2 Mind Shatter
    1 Primal Command
    4 Thoughtseize

Jund Ramp plays a lot like the GR Ramp decks of old accelerate into a lot of mana, play big stuff. The Black in this deck gives it a lot of power in the late game especially in Broodmate Dragon

    Faeries

    6 Island
    2 Swamp
    1 Faerie Conclave
    4 Mutavault

    2 Plumeveil
    2 Sower Of Temptation
    1 Countersquall
    4 Infest
    4 Thoughtseize

ahh Faeries, i played this deck in more tournaments than any other over the last year and a half. It hasn't gained much from the new sets, but it kinda needed to be slowed down as it was a driving force in standard and the other decks needed to catch up. Still a solid deck even if you don't play anything new.

    Blightning

    9 Mountain
    4 Auntie's Hovel
    3 Ghitu Encampment
    4 Graven Cairns

    4 Figure Of Destiny
    3 Goblin Outlander
    4 Hellspark Elemental
    4 Mogg Fanatic
    2 Shambling Remains

    4 Flame Javelin
    3 Terror
    3 Volcanic Fallout
    1 Banefire
    4 Blightning

    sb
    3 Dragon's Claw
    1 Shambling Remains
    2 Everlasting Torment
    2 Chaotic Backlash
    2 Wild Ricochet
    1 Banefire
    4 Deathmark

The Blightning Red a solid choice for destroying blue decks, I mean they dont even stand a chance. And my new favourite Green Red Deck Wins, this deck utalizes the best card in the new set Bloodbraid Elf and he's sooo broken!
